Methodology · reference model v0.2
How accurate is the range, and where does it come from?
Honest answer: the range is a source-backed estimate that has not yet been calibrated against real Canadian quotes. It is built from 48 published sources: 15 government datasets, 11 retailer or contractor-network price lists, and 22 cost guides. Every report cites the sources behind it.
The band around the central estimate is deliberately wide where the published sources disagree: about ±14% for roofing, ±15% for HVAC and windows, and ±25% for bathrooms and kitchens, where finish level and hidden conditions swing prices the most.
Each quote checked while signed in can be contributed, anonymized, to an observed-quote index. The number of observed quotes for your city is shown on every report. As that number grows, the ranges will be calibrated city by city and the bands will narrow. Until then, treat the range as the basis for better questions, not as a bid.
Regional index
Labour from Job Bank, market from published city premiums
Regional index = 0.35 × labour index + 0.65 × market index. Labour is the Job Bank median hourly wage for the trade in that region divided by the Canadian median. Market is the city premium published by the cost guides. The blend weights are a modelling choice, not a sourced fact, and will be replaced by observed quotes. No seasonal adjustment is applied: no Canadian source for it was found.
